Sonoff S20 Smartplug

The Ultimate Hackable Smart Plug.

Welcome to my electronics review blog post. My reviews are based on my own findings with products designed for smart home tech.

“Great little device that can do more than you'd think".

My S20 Review

The Sonoff S20 Smart plug has been around for a while now and seems to be well used throughout the online smart home community.

I have quite a few of them scattered around my home to control lamps mainly.

Out of the box they work only with the EWEElink app from Sonoff.

With a little tinkering they can be integrated with many proprietary smart home systems.

Personally i favour OpenHab as its probably the best system for individual configuration and tailoring to suit the end users needs / requirements.

To allow this the S20 requires re-flashing with new firmware, i use ESPEasy as this takes only a few minutes and give some great options to the S20 that where unavailable in the original out of box unit.

Overview

The S20 is well made and compact, the packaging is akin to the box you'd expect to receive and new iphone in...... It comes with a scannable Q code for a quick download of the Eweelink App if you'd prefer to use it standalone.

On disassembly i was pleased to find that the PCB is well laid out and seems to be well manufactured. Most importantly for my use it has the programming connections on the main pcb in view and easy to attach a programmer too.

There is also a manual button to allow the device to be used like a normal switch, this doubles as the flash upload button when reprogramming the device for use with different firmware.

If you wish to program this device for use in your smart home system go to my S20 page on the main website for the firmware and full instructions of how to replace and set up the firmware.

There are a few small niggles if i was to be picky.....

1) Requires a serial programmer to upload firmware

2) Wifi Range is limited

The good points....

1) Very Reliable

2) Means no messing around with home electrics

3) Inexpensive to purchase (under 10 GBP)

4) With new firmware will work with OpenHab and other smart home systems

5) Works with Googlehome and Amazon Alexa smart assistants
